Licence or certificate?
Two different things, and the words are not interchangeable.
- A LICENCE is legal. Police enforce it, you can be fined for driving without one, and it is earned in person at a driving school — there is a practical drive you cannot do from a sofa. See "Driving school".
- A CERTIFICATE is a skill. Nobody can fine you for lacking one. It raises your PAY RATE on the jobs that respect it, or unlocks a specific ability. It is pure theory, so you sit it online.
Where certificates happen
On your phone — the Courses app. Install it from the App Store if it isn't on your home screen.
Everything lives there: what each course awards, the fee, the number of questions, the pass mark, and the full study guide. The guide is free and re-readable, and it covers every topic the exam asks about. Read it first.
The instructors are still out in the world — the college registrar, the Auto Tech instructor, the K9 training officer — and talking to any of them opens the app for you. They are how you find out a course exists; they are not where you sit it.
The catalogue
- Mining Safety — $1,500, grants `mining_safety` Mining pays the skilled rate (~$410/hr instead of ~$370/hr).
- Recycling Ops — $1,200, grants `recycling_ops` Foundry pays the skilled rate (~$417/hr instead of ~$370/hr).
- Auto Mechanic — $2,000, grants `mechanic_basic` Lets a mechanic issue invoices. Without it you can still flag vehicles and do visual mods — you just can't bill for them.
- K9 Handler — free, sworn officers only, grants `k9_handler` Required to run a K9 unit. Civilians can't sit it.
The fee, and failing
Course fees are charged to your BANK ACCOUNT. You're enrolling online — there's nobody to hand cash to. If you don't have an account yet, open one at any bank and come back; the app will tell you so instead of taking your money.
You pay to SIT the exam, not to pass it. Fail and the money is gone. Abandoning halfway counts as a fail — so does walking out on a paper you're losing.
Fail one and that specific course locks for 10 minutes. Other courses stay open in the meantime.
(The driving school is different — you pay a person there, so it takes either bank or cash.)
Without a certificate
Almost nothing is closed to you. A certificate is a pay rise you buy up front, not a gate — the only things genuinely gated are mechanic invoicing and running a K9.
